Freiburg is a bustling, historic town that boasts an international student population and broad cultural influences and curiosities. It is known as the sunniest spot in all of Germany, which, along with its reputation for exceptional cuisine, helps account for its popularity as a destination for students, tourists, and artists.
Given Freiburg’s unique geography — flanked as it is on three sides by woods — students often occupy themselves outside of class hiking or biking in the Black Forest, or swimming or boating in nearby lakes; they also read and write in cafes, of which in Freiburg there are many. Freiburg's geographical position in the so-called "tri-border region" where Switzerland, France and Germany meet, allows for day trips to Switzerland and France, which provides program participants with a chance to experience Europe across borders, languages and nationalities and thrive in a culturally rich environment.
The beauty of Freiburg speaks for itself. In addition to the markets full of fresh produce, the small shops and overflowing sidewalk cafes, the area has something for committed hikers and daydreaming flâneurs alike.
In Freiburg life moves easily between lively cultural and outdoor activities and productive solitude.
Activities Outside the Classroom
Student guides will lead optional outings into the city and the Black Forest (literally within walking distance of the university). Possible outdoor activities include hiking, biking, swimming, boating; the city also has many museums, cinemas, theaters, music venues, markets, malls and cafes.
Optional group outings to the theater, to dance performances or concerts may be organized by the Program Directors. There will also be optional outings to outlying towns or attractions (to Staufen or Schluchsee, for instance), given participant interest and inclination.
